COS-ARTSTRAVAGANZA-300dpiGlobetrotting performance, art, music, fashion and new media provocateurs Chicks on Speed (Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan) are back with their genre-defying and shape-shifting full-lenght album Artstravaganza.

Artstravaganza is Chicks on Speed’s innovative perspective on the current collision between analog and digital worlds. Their songs lie at the cutting edges of activism and media-pop-art, where the digital world embraces the hand made, rough and spontaneous, interlacing the programmed, the multi-layered and delicious data scapes, where sloganeering leads us through to time rippling via a stop in a self-made utopia and the strobe light stays on.

The album includes musical contributions from a diverse range of collaborators, such as Australian journalist and activist JULIAN ASSANGE, artist and musician YOKO ONO, 60’s performance artist and director of ZKM PETER WEIBEL, Philanthropist, TBA21 chairman and pop star princess FRANCESCA VON HABSBURG, Singaporean artist ANGIE SEAH, long time Chicks on Speed collaborator ANAT BEN DAVID and the students of Interface Cultures lab, University of Art and Design, Linz.

With ARTSTRAVAGANZA and six associated iPad apps, Chicks on Speed seek to overcome a separation of art forms and genres for an integrated artistic approach, influenced by the group’s multidisciplinary artistic research to date, which encompases sound, science, body-centric art performance, interactive technology and objectinstruments (new interfaces for musical expression). Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan engage collective strategies as well as radical approaches to making work which demonstrate their ethos of the Utopian Gesamtkunstwerk (all encompasing artwork). Chicks on Speed have presented their sensorial audio-visual pieces at museums including MoMA in New York, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, Centre Pompidou in Paris and 55th Venice Biennale.

ARTSTRAVAGANZA is produced by Chicks on Speed with CHRISTOPHER JUST, OLIVER HORTON, PHILL SPEISER and TIMOR LITZENBERGER.

UTOPIA, the first single of the album, was released worldwide on July, 3rd 2014 along with three remixes.

CULTURAL WORKSHIP NOW! will be the first ever large-scale presentation the work of CHICKS ON SPEED in Germany, from their beginnings in the 1990s up until the present day. CHICKS ON SPEED are pioneers of the interdisciplinary arts, blurring the lines between art, fashion, music, technology and performances and combining these forms to create a new whole.
Kunstraum Kreuzberg will become the headquarters, workspace and meeting point for diverse artists, setting the course for a cultural production of the future. Besides an exhibition featuring concrete objects, installations and video works, there will be a focus on the presentation and production of new performances.
The CULTURAL WORKSHIP is a Noah’s Ark for art that exudes the spirit Warhol’s Factory and pays homage to communal excess-processes.
CHICKS ON SPEED form the electrifying nexus of their motto ART, MUSIC, FASHION, ACTION! Since the collective’s formation the past 15 years has seen the intensive collaboration with other artists becoming an integral component of the group’s artistic practice – and this fluctuating structure can be seen in the exhibition CULTURAL WORKSHIP NOW! Long-term companions such as A.L. Steiner, Kathi Glas, Douglas Gordon, Deborah Schamoni and Anat Ben-David are represented here alongside cooperation partners such as Jeremy Scott and Karl Lagerfeld. CHICKS ON SPEED’s cosmos is not only home to these accomplished old hands but also to artists such as Kroot Juurak, Vladimir Karaleev, Johnny Dogday, Christophe Coppins, Max Kibardin, Bifacco, Alex Posada and Hangar.org, Nadine Jessen, Meritxell Romanos, Ester g. Mecías, Australian Tapestry Workshop, Jasmina Machina, to name but a few.
Parallel to the exhibition that features the diversity of CHICKS ON SPEED’s artistic field, there will be a series of performance/music/lecture evenings between the 14th and 17th of September held in the rooms of the former chapel (Studio 1)

Mit CULTURAL WORKSHIP NOW! präsentieren die CHICKS ON SPEED zum ersten Mal in Deutschland großflächig ihre Arbeit – von den Anfängen in den 90er Jahren bis zur Gegenwart. CHICKS ON SPEED sind Pionierinnen der interdisziplinären Künste: sie verwischen die Grenzen von Kunst, Mode, Musik, Technologie und Performances und bündeln diese Formen zu neuem Ganzen.

 

Der Kunstraum Kreuzberg wird zum Headquarter, zum Arbeits- und Begegnungsraum diverser Künstler, um die Weichen für die kulturelle Produktion der Zukunft zu stellen. Dabei steht neben der Ausstellung konkreter Objekte, Installationen und Video-Arbeiten auch die Präsentation und Produktion neuer Performances im Fokus.
Das CULTURAL WORKSHIP ist eine Kunst-Arche-Noah, die den Geist der Warhol´schen Factory atmet und den gemeinsamen Exzess-Prozess huldigt.
CHICKS ON SPEED sind das elektrisierende Zentrum für ihre Devise von ART, MUSIC, FASHION, ACTION! In den 15 Jahren seit der Gründung des Kollektives sind die intensiven Zusammenarbeiten mit anderen Künstlern fester Bestandteil der künstlerischen Praxis der Gruppe. Diese fluktuierende Struktur bildet sich auch in der Ausstellung CULTURAL WORKSHIP NOW! ab: langfristige Wegbegleiterinnen wie A.L. Steiner, Kathi Glas, Douglas Gordon, Deborah Schamoni und Anat Ben-David sind ebenso vertreten wie temporäre Kooperationspartner beispielsweise Jeremy Scott und Karl Lagerfeld. Zum Kosmos der CHICKS ON SPEED gehören neben diesen alten Hasen auch Künstlerinnen wie Kroot Juurak, Jonathan Logan, Johnny Dogday, Christophe Coppins, Max Kibardin, Bifacco, Alex Posada and Hangar.org, Nadine Jessen, Australian Tapestry Workshop, Jasmina Machina, u.a.
Neben dieser Ausstellung, die die Vielfalt des künstlerischen Feldes der CHICKS ON SPEED absteckt, findet vom 14.-17.9. eine Reihe von Performance-Music-Lecture-Abenden in den Räumen der ehemaligen Kapelle (Studio 1) statt.
