ELECTRONICAT
is Fred Bigot, a Parisian performer who managed to establish himself
as one of the most exciting new acts between `electronic music`
and `rock` for the past few years. So ELECTRONICAT found himself
listed in last years top 10 of the prestigious `Time Out New York`-magazine
and described as `life techno with a touch of glam rock. so obvious,
you wonder why nobody thought of it before`. ELECTRONICAT released
several LPs and Singles on such different labels as ONITOR, ANGELIKA
KÖHLERMANN and DISKO B ( `Amour Salé`, db 105, 2002).
`21st Century Toy` now proves that the combination of Independent
pop AND electronic music only rocks if false veneration is left
behind. So let` s forget everything we know about Electroclash and
New Rock. ELECTRONICATS new album spells in loud letters his definition
of electronic music with an enhanced mixture of laptop comfort and
sweating hardware. ELECTRONICAT starts with the contradictions,
which apparently exist unbridgeable between dirty Blues-Rock analogue
sounds and the clear electronically generated sounds: Here you will
find Rock` n` Roll rhythm gimmicks made with dirty drum machine
bassdrums, Glam-Rock and 60ies Vocals recorded in a bedroom,
distorting guitar-frequencies enhanced with amazing software. Already
the opener `Tonight` clearly formulates Bigots enthusiasm to combine
the extremes with humour as he melts Cramps psychobilly-guitar-riffs
with ELECTRONICATS typical dirty shuffle boogie bass rhythm and
vocals reminding of the Yardbirds. `Gitarkatze` and `Birds want
to have fun` could be laughing attacks on lyrics with sense but
if we tell you that the first one is directly influenced by both
- Steeve Hillage's "Fish Rising" and Blixa Bargeld's "Maschine"
and the second by Cindy Lauper and Serge Gainsbourg - the only thing
you can do is scratching your head and say to yourself: WHAT'S IN
ELECTRONICATS MIND? `Friscobay` is the most significant song for
Bigots tipsy no-limit attitude, and combines mad sound inventions
with a punk attitude, whereas the title track `21st century toy`
gives a reminiscence of Brian Eno fighting with Led Zeppelin III
guitars and 60ies psychedelic choirs. It` s a monster bass ride
through the hell of the future of Pop an in between biker rock anthems
(`Till I Die`) and glittering electronic ballads (`Whenever you
want`) you find the intensity which marked his efforts on the DEPECHE
MODE Remix (`Dead Of Night`, released on Mute Records, 2002).
Working with Gerhard Potuznik (G.D.LUXXE, also co-producer of CHICKS
ON SPEED) canalized ELECTRONICATs almost schizophrenic devotion
to noisy and pushing sounds. Accompanied at the microphone by CATRIONA
SHAW (QUEEN OF JAPAN) the record develops intimate density resulting
in a new brand of electronically expressed music which is best described
as `electric-glam-rock`n`roll`.
