Alek Stark. Madrid. Spain. 1971.

More than 15 years ago, Alek Stark started his career making musik under the influence of his father´s old records collection (Giorgio Moroder and things like that) and then the first works of Kraftwerk, Twilight 22, Cybotron or Afrika Bambaataa.

The first tracks were done by posting small pieces of tapes previously recorded with fragments of the music played by the radio stations of the american base in Torrejón de Ardoz. That kind of elektro musk was called “break”.

The elektro movement in Spain has been always quite underground: a few demos, much quality but a lot of indifference in the media.

In 1996 Alek Star incorporated to his studio a TR808, a Korg MS20 and a MPC, so the computer lost its protagonist role. In 1997 he finished his first album as Elektrosher, (“Mhundotronika”, Boozo Music).

Between 1997 Alek Stark was named to select the tracklist of a compilation called “Elektrodomesticos”, a sampler of elektro music tracks made in Spain and published by Superego, one of the most important spanish hip hop labels. Alek Stark appears in this copilation with two different names: Elektrosher and Khosmaker.

Due to the success of “Elektrodomesticos”, Alek decided to create a sublabel in Superego called Headspin, a small label destributed in the rest of the world by Universal Music, with some references available in colour vinyl and limited editions.

The first 12inch single published by Headspin is the debut of Khosmaker: “Roock it!”. This reference sold 2000 records in Spain. And then came “Star Whores, the elektro pop menace”, an Ep featuring Moockie, and the (second) album “Klonik” with contributions of Robert Calvin and Neonwerk.

Headspin joint all those musicians that a few years before Alek could only listen on tapes. He mixed, mastered and designed the whole of the references; even today it´s easy to find in stores the robots included in the limited edition of “Klonik” Lp.

In Sonar 2001 festival, Alek Stark decided to create his own label: Star Whores Records, as an attempt to export the most interesting elektro and tecno pop projects based in Spain. The first reference of the label “Start to Fuck with Star Whores Records Vol. 1” features tracks of the seven artists in the label by the way: Neonwerk, Robert Calvin, Oral, Afterfuture, Vadim Tudor, Medio Escínico and Alek Stark of course. The vinyl edition includes specil mixes of the best songs on a limited and numered edition of only 69 records.

Later Disko B recieved a demo of Alek Stark and decided to licence “Highway to Disko”.

Alek got a very fresh style, his productions are a pure state of enjoyment of elektro and disko music with a weak dark sound: “when I´m producing as Alek Stark, I need something automatic. A track can´t be wandering more than two or three days. It must work in the moment, if it dosen´t, then the track goes back to the folder…, some weeks later I listen to those sketches, end uup the tracks, add effects, mix very loud and radically everythings and finally master the result. I work htis way because I don´t want to feel tired with my own music, when I listen to a song by Alek Stark, it seems to me that sensastion of distance”.

Alek Stark´s been playing live with different names in differents clubs, but the most important gig he´s ever done was in the Sonar Festival in 1999, that year, spanish musical press selected Alek´s show as one of the best five electronic live acts.

By the way Star Whores artists are residents djs in some of the most important spanish clubs (Neon/Nitsa, Sofa Club y Radar) where they play sessions featuring kitsch italodisco, elektro body wave and harder sounds closer to elektro musik.
